What does a Medical Coding & Billing Professional do?

A medical coder is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and converting diagnoses, procedures, supplies, and services into standardized codes used on claims submitted to payers for reimbursement. Their accuracy directly supports the financial health of the organization and indirectly impacts patient care outcomes. Medical billers, on the other hand, use these assigned codes to prepare, submit, and monitor insurance claims. Professionals trained in both areas often handle both responsibilities—coding medical information and managing insurance claim processes. Earning industry-recognized certifications showcases the expertise and competency of Coders and Billers in the field.

  • Precisely identify and reference the appropriate documentation within patient records to ensure accuracy in coding and billing procedures.
  • File reimbursement claims in accordance with specific payer guidelines and procedures.
  • Examine patient records and apply the appropriate numerical codes for all diagnoses and procedures.
  • Focus your expertise in physician-focused environments, including private practices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialized healthcare centers.
  • Gain hands-on experience in coding operative reports as well as evaluation and management (E/M) services.

What You’ll Learn – HI 5000 Medical Coding and Billing Professional

Amara’s Medical Coding and Billing Professional program offers a structured pathway from foundational concepts to advanced-level skills, preparing graduates for a successful career in billing and coding, primarily within physician office-based environments. This 28-week online dual-certification program covers Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology, Insurance Billing and Coding Essentials, and Medical Coding. Earning both the CBCS and CPC-A or CCS-P credentials enhances employability, career flexibility, and advancement opportunities in outpatient medical coding and reimbursement.

Students start with H1-1011: Insurance and Billing, and Coding Essentials, where they develop a broad understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding without manuals, building the foundation for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam. From there, they advance to H1-1051: Medical Coding, which provides in-depth instruction in documentation review, detail abstraction, and assignment of diagnosis, procedure, and professional service codes. This course emphasizes the practical use of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding manuals alongside official coding guidelines, preparing students for professional-level certifications such as CPC-A or CCS-P.

The program’s primary goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to successfully pass the CBCS exam. Graduates may then pursue the optional but highly regarded CPC or CCS-P certifications, considered the gold standard for physician office coding. Students who achieve the CPC credential initially hold the CPC-A (apprentice) designation, which upgrades to the full CPC credential upon completing one year of coding experience. Certified coders with professional-level credentials are vital to ensuring compliance and profitability in medical practices and typically earn about 20% more than their non-certified peers.

Amara covers the exam fees for the CBCS and one professional-level exam (either CPC or CCS-P).
