What does a Behavior Technician do?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) operates under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in clinical settings, helping implement treatment plans for individuals such as children with autism or adults with developmental disabilities. This field emphasizes the science of human behavior and aims to reduce challenging behaviors while promoting skill development. RBTs may also support patients in school or home environments by teaching daily living and adaptive skills.

  • Deliver behavior-analytic services directly in accordance with the individualized recommendations and treatment plans outlined by the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
  • Minimize or prevent challenging behaviors by identifying and understanding the motivational factors driving those behaviors.
  • Possess foundational knowledge of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and the use of functional behavior assessment (FBA) tools to identify the causes of behaviors and develop effective intervention strategies.
  • Assist in teaching both children and adults essential skills—including language and communication, social interaction, daily living and adaptive tasks, and pre-academic abilities—while collecting and analyzing data in collaboration with the BCBA.
  • Clearly understand and define specific behaviors, then establish an appropriate method to accurately measure and track them.

Strong customer service skills are essential in every setting, as each patient, client, or customer plays a vital role in your work.

Achieving RBT certification highlights your commitment to quality patient care and excellent service.
