Professionals in this field may work behind the scenes managing data and records, or on the front lines assisting patients with billing, insurance, and other administrative needs.

  • Manage and operate nursing unit communication systems effectively
  • Accurately record diagnostic test results, vital signs, and census data

  • Maintain patient records by scanning reports into the EMR or inserting them into physical charts

  • Transcribe and monitor physician orders using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, and abbreviations

  • Demonstrate professional soft skills expected of allied healthcare professionals, including communication, teamwork, and adaptability

What You’ll Learn – HI 8000 Health Unit Coordinator

The role of a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) has grown significantly with the introduction of new technology, evolving legal and ethical standards, and changes in healthcare support roles. Our comprehensive certification program is designed with this evolution in mind, equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as a HUC.

In just 18 weeks, you’ll complete four courses that introduce you to healthcare facility operations and the core responsibilities of a Certified Health Unit Coordinator.

Because HUCs often transcribe physician orders and update patient records, it’s essential to have a solid foundation in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. You’ll complete a prerequisite course covering these areas to ensure you can confidently communicate in the language of medicine.

You’ll also gain training in Electronic Health Records (EHRs), learning how to perform audits, process release requests, and manage patient demographic and insurance information. These are critical skills for maintaining accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in today’s healthcare settings.

Upon completion, you’ll be prepared to sit for both the Certified Health Unit Coordinator (CHUC) exam through the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) and the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Graduates of our Health Unit Coordinator program can pursue a wide variety of roles, including Certified Health Unit Coordinator, Unit Secretary, Unit Clerk, Monitor Technician, Ward Clerk, Scheduling Coordinator, Patient Access Coordinator, and more.
