What Does a Professional Caregiver Do?

A Professional Caregiver offers assistance and support—such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and companionship—to individuals who need help with daily activities due to illness, disability, aging, or other health conditions. Their responsibilities generally focus on non-medical care. Professional Caregivers may work in private homes, assisted living communities, nursing homes, or hospitals, often with schedules that include weekends, nights, and holidays. The main objective of a Professional Caregiver is to enhance the quality of life for those they serve by providing both physical and emotional support.

  • Learn and comply with relevant state and national laws, regulations, and standards, including those established by HIPAA.
  • Carry out key caregiving duties—such as aiding with personal hygiene, providing mobility assistance, and preparing meals—while adhering to established protocols.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and professional abilities, including empathy, active listening, clear communication, and effective teamwork.
  • Implement safety measures, infection control practices, and OSHA standards to maintain a safe caregiving environment.

What You’ll Learn – HI 7100 Professional Caregiver

The Professional Caregiver program provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge to support clients’ daily living needs and improve their quality of life. It is well-suited for individuals who want to work directly with patients in various healthcare settings and is ideal for those who are compassionate, empathetic, and eager to expand their understanding of patient care and healthcare practices.

This program trains students to assist with daily living activities such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, mobility support, and personal care. It also covers limited medical assistance, including monitoring vital signs and providing medication reminders. In addition, it emphasizes interpersonal skills like empathy, effective communication, and active listening—qualities essential to delivering high-quality care.

Upon completing the Professional Caregiver program, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) exam, administered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Earning the CHHA credential does not grant licensure as a Home Health Aide in any state. Licensure or certification requirements vary by state, and the CHHA certification serves to validate a caregiver’s knowledge and skills, boosting job prospects and earning potential, but it is not intended as a prerequisite for state licensure.

Important: If the ultimate goal is to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or licensed Home Health Aide (HHA), the program must be completed through a partner organization or employer. In such partnerships, Amara delivers the didactic portion of the CNA or HHA program, while the employer or partner provides the required clinical/lab experience (for CNAs) or supervised practicum (for HHAs) to meet state-specific program approval requirements in the candidate’s intended work location.
