What Does a Surgical Technologist Do?

The role of a Surgical Technologist is vital to the success of surgical procedures and patient safety. Surgical Technologists are responsible for preparing operating rooms, arranging and checking equipment, and assisting physicians during surgeries. They engage with patients before, during, and after procedures, ensuring comprehensive care throughout the surgical process.

Before surgery, technologists assemble and verify surgical instruments and equipment, prepare patients by positioning, draping, and disinfecting the incision site, and ensure everything is ready for a safe procedure. During surgery, they pass sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon, maintain aseptic technique, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and may assist by holding retractors or setting up robotic surgical systems. After surgery, they often apply dressings to incision sites, transport patients to recovery, and restock the operating room with necessary equipment and supplies.

  • Ensure and maintain sterile operative fields

  • Manage and monitor inventory of medical supplies and equipment

  • Provide direct assistance to healthcare professionals during surgical procedures

  • Prepare biological specimens for laboratory testing and analysis

  • Sterilize and maintain medical instruments and equipment

What You’ll Learn – ST 3000 Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technologists, also known as Operating Room Technicians, play a critical role in the surgical team by assisting surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals throughout an operation. This rewarding and well-compensated career offers the chance to enter the healthcare industry and thrive in a fast-paced, stimulating environment. However, this role requires resilience—Surgical Technologists are exposed to intense sights, sounds, and situations, and must remain calm and focused in high-pressure, life-or-death scenarios. Individuals pursuing this career must be prepared to work in demanding and non-traditional settings.

The Amara Surgical Technologist program provides students with immersive training through virtual and hands-on learning experiences. Surgical procedures are demonstrated using virtual tools or live-recorded video, then practiced through simulations—creating a safe, repeatable, and highly engaging environment to develop essential skills.

This program prepares students for the Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) exam, offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Earning this credential validates the clinical knowledge and technical skills required to maintain aseptic conditions, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and ensure patient safety throughout every surgical procedure.

To meet national certification requirements, students must complete a clinical case documentation component. This includes a minimum of 125 surgical cases, consisting of at least 30 scrubs in general surgery (with a maximum of 50) and at least 75 scrubs across three additional specialties (such as Gynecology, Obstetrics, Otorhinolaryngology, Genitourinary, Thoracic, Plastic/Reconstructive, Cardiovascular, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Peripheral Vascular, or other areas). Of these cases, at least 90 must be first scrub cases. Students are strongly encouraged to review job postings and state-specific requirements prior to enrollment to confirm eligibility upon graduation.

While Amara does not guarantee clinical placement, we provide extensive resources, and our dedicated clinical team is available to support students from the start of their program through completion.
